Why Proprioception Is Important To You

Have you ever heard that human’s have a sixth sense? Proprioception is the unconscious perception of movement and spatial orientation arising within the body itself. Proprioceptive feedback is crucial in the conscious and unconscious awareness of a joint or limb in motion. To make this simpler, think about when you are walking, you do not have to stare at your feet while you walk. You can take each step while looking at another object. The same can be said if you place your hand behind your back, you can’t see it, but you know it is still there.

This ability is extremely important in our day to day living. It also is important in sport athletes as well. Think about a soccer player who is trying to make a cut on the field. If they sense that their foot is in one position, but in reality is actually a few inches off, it may put more stress on an area, such as an ankle or knee, and cause an injury. These injuries can be prevented with balance and postural control along with chiropractic care.

Along with sport athletes, proprioception is important in the elderly population. Falls in this population are higher and more dangerous. A study found that, Chiropractic Care can improve sensorimotor function and multisensory integration associated with fall risk. (3) Treatment gave these folks an increase reaction time when stepping which allowed them to stabilize their footing or “catch” themselves before falling.

No matter what age you are, you can benefit from Chiropractic Care. Just having the ability to have better Proprioception should be important to everyone. From the sport athlete who wants to continue playing and being the top athlete in their sport to the older population who want to be able to avoid falls.
