Why Vitamin D is Important for Your Health

Vit-DVitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be obtained through eating certain foods or produced in the body when ultraviolet rays from the sun hits our skin. Though during this time of year, people tend to not spend as much time outside as they do during the summer. Because of this, people are not getting enough Vitamin D daily and it may be affecting their health. Vitamin D has multiple health benefits no matter your age. One of the important roles that Vitamin D plays is helping with our immune system. Our immune cells contain receptors for Vitamin D and it has been shown that this vitamin helps prevent prolonged or excessive inflammation in our body. Along with prevention of inflammation, Vitamin D helps increase muscle strength. One study found that supplementing lead to better increases in muscle strength and fewer falls. (2)  Also, Vitamin D helps increase the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which is important when it comes to the elderly. A study showed that elderly individuals taking Vitamin D supplements benefited from lower risk of bone fractures. (1)
